Individual Therapy
Marriage and Family Therapists don't just do couples and family therapy, they see individuals too.
When clients come in for individual therapy the first session is when all the paperwork is done. The first session is called an "intake" session and is where information about the client is gathered and the clients goals are discussed so a treatment plan can be created. A treatment plan is a roadmap of sorts to help guide the therapist on how to best help the client reach their goals.

Get the Most Out of Therapy
When you decide to go see a therapist just remember it took years to get you where you are now and that change doesn't happen over night. Change is a process. We live in a fast paced society that is used to "instant gratification" so this can be a frustrating aspect of therapy. Respect the process, and follow the following tips:
- Attend your sessions as scheduled.
- Do any "homework" assigned wether its reading something suggested, journaling or deep breathing because your therapist is helping you to help yourself and believe it or not, that can be very empowering.
- Remember to practice self-compassion. If you don't know what that is or what it would even feel like, don't worry, your therapist will help you.
